Following the explosive events of Ep. 9: Domino, this episode begins with a totally different vibe as we see Isaac (Mark Jackson) walking to work the main theme from Bachelor in Paradise playing, we then learn the details of what is involved in Bortus (Peter Macon) and Klyden (Chad L. Coleman) renewal of vows. We then get to see that play out! Following the ceremony, Isaac is inspired to renew his commit himself to Clare (Penny Johnson Jerald) so proposes to her!
Meanwhile, The Orville is on its way to check in with researchers on Sargas 4, only to find themselves receiving a message from Lysella (Giorgia Whigham) who seeks asylum on their ship. We were introduced to Lysella back in Season 1 Ep. 7’s “Majority Rule.” After some deliberation, Captain Ed Mercer (Seth McFarlane) and Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) agree to Lysella’s request with Grayson assigned with helping Lysella adjust.
After speaking to her children, Clare accepts Issac’s proposal. The problem is Isaac has been speaking to Lieutenant Commander John LaMarr who has advised Isaac that he has only “been” with Clare so should possibly seek out some more dates before committing. Issac responds by asking Grayson out for a date! Later, Clare asks to speak to Grayson, Grayson believes it is because of Isaac asking her out but it is to ask her to be her Chief Bridesmaid. Grayson then explains what happened with Isaac, prompting Clare to go have a chat with Lamarr!
Later, Grayson continues to help Lysella adjust to life in the Union but it is not working. Lysella is dazzled by the technological advances and disturbed by the interpersonal relationships between various species. This makes her feel guilty for abandoning her planet and wants to return home.
Isaac asks Lieutenant Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) to be his best man as he is funny. Bortus makes an objection to this stating he is funny too. As crew members try to explain to Isaac why Gordon may be the better choice, Isaac gives the role to Bortus!
Following the Stag and Hen nights, Lysella tells Grayson that she wants to go home, but just before she leaves, Grayson and Talla (Jessica Szohr) discover that Lysella has in her possession a comscanner full of futuristic technology information that she wants to use to change her world. Rather than be angry, Grayson shows Lysella a simulation of a world the Union attempted to help in a similar fashion only for it to fall into ruin only a few years later, leading the Union to ban interfering in a planet’s natural development. This makes Lysella decide to stay on The Orville.
Everyone then gathers for the wedding with an old face returning to celebrate!
Verdict: 8/10. A solid episode to end the season on that delivers at a relaxed pace compared to what we have been experiencing this season. Everyone gets there moment to shine, and it was nice to see an old face. We get some of the humour back that has been taking a back seat as of late, as well as solid character progression that will suit Season 4 well when it happens! (COUGH COUGH!). The wait for Season 4 begins!
