Geek-Girl vol.1: Lightning Strikes!

Geek-Girl gets collected and the Nerd-becomes-cool-Superhero trope gets flipped on its head!

Created and written by Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini) and illustrated by Carlos Granda (Grimm Fairy Tales, Charmed), in Geek-Girl vol.1: Lightning Strikes! (collecting the first 4-issue Geek-Girl Mini-Series) we meet attractive, popular Maine college coed Ruby Kaye. Ruby is a girl used to getting anything she wants; and when she overhears Trevor Goldstein, the resident college brainiac, talking about super-tech glasses he’s invented, she decides she wants them!

Ruby and her friend Stacey get Trevor and his buddy drunk, and Ruby wins the glasses off Trevor in a game of Strip Poker. She’s granted flight and super-strength, but – due to a flaw in the glasses’ programming – also lands herself with super-klutziness!  And this is just the beginning of the changes the glasses are going to wreak on Ruby…

“When we’re introduced to Ruby, she’s wearing the specs and is flying around in a super-hero costume, looking for crime, chatting to her BFF Summer on her cellphone, questioning if she’s ‘doing it right’; because she’s been at this a couple nights now and nothing’s happening,” says creator/writer Johnson. “But then something does happen. Right in front of Ruby, Neon Girl – Maine’s resident big-shot Super-Heroine – is blasted through a billboard by a mysterious new villain.

“Neon Girl is hospitalized by this extremely powerful, enigmatic woman, Lightning Storm, who seems to have come from nowhere,” says Johnson, “and a scared Ruby reveals how she got the glasses on a whim, how it was her friend Summer who made her a costume and came up with a superhero name for her – and how she doesn’t really know what she’s doing,” Johnson continues. “But this isn’t a point of view the no-nonsense Neon Girl has any time for; her attitude is that ‘Geek-Girl’ has super powers and sure dresses like a superheroine, so she needs to step up and stop Lightning Storm!” says Johnson.

And while Ms. Kaye’s trying to get her head around this, things have taken a hit in her social life; thanks to the side effects of the glasses, the only evidence she’s provided her ‘cooler-than-thou’ clique of her powers has involved knocking drinks over them – alienating her from all but Summer. Johnson concludes, “So with a social life in tatters and a new status she doesn’t really understand, Ruby has to try and take on an extremely dangerous force who’s taken down someone who’s like a hundred times better at super-heroing than she is. Let’s see how that goes…”

HYPER FORCE NEO is coming!

In HYPER FORCE NEO, a wild new middle grade sci-fi graphic novel from Z2 Comics, creator Jarrett Williams throws us head-first into the future (the year 21XX, to be precise). And Jarrett’s world isn’t some dreary dystopia; it’s a distillation of everything great about our technological present painted with a brightly optimistic futurist pallette. The people of New Sigma City live mostly normal lives, updating social media constantly in real time, and the connection is more Hallmark than Big Brother. Life proceeds sprightly, with some fun techy upgrades and a spirit of camaraderie and community we could all use more of.
This laid-back peace is threatened when an evil force vanquished long ago by the city’s founder rises again, with squishy-looking alien minions leaving spy devices around town and someone called “Dark Chef” literally cooking up evil plots in his kitchen. In traditional super sentai fashion, dormant robot helpers reactivate and recruit a team of teen heroes to save the day. Given some powerful super suits and giant robots, the kids who make up Hyper Force Neo have to learn fast as they fight, with their only training coming from video games, comic books, and movies — something any kid today can relate to (and hope for!).
Jarrett (Super Pro K.O., Adventure Time) drives the fast-paced alien invasion plot with diverse characters who have their own personalities, interests, and skills, so kids from all backgrounds have a point-of-view character to call their own. He fills each page with visual asides, jokes, chibi-style internal reflections, gear labels, and video-game-ish vital stats, giving readers a reason to come back and pore over every panel.

HYPER FORCE NEO, on-sale now in comics shops and July 25 in bookstores, is a refreshingly light manga-infused adventure for kids who love Scott Pilgrim, Power Rangers, or just having fun on a Saturday morning

The Ferryman is coming!

After a failed suicide attempt, troubled and lonely teen MARA(Nicola Holt) finds herself stalked by a malevolent entity.

“The Ferryman” began production in March 2017, with a fantastic cast that includes NICOLA HOLT as MARA; GARTH MAUNDERS as ROLAND; SHOBI RAE MCLEAN as JULIA; AZZ MOHAMMED as THE DETECTIVE; PAM ASHTON as THE NURSE; FRANK MATHEWS as THE THERAPIST and PHILIP SCOTT-SHURETY as the mysterious THE FERRYMAN.

Shooting took place in and around Manchester throughout March and April, with the production taking inspiration from Sundance hit “Tangerine” and shooting on the iPhone 7, allowing a level of intimacy rarely seen in the horror genre and pushing this advancing technology to its limits.

Director Elliott Maguire :

“As much a psychological drama as a horror film, The Ferryman explores important themes such as depression and alienation in the modern world, while also delivering a truly terrifying cinematic experience. In the writing process I took inspiration from classics such as Let The Right One In and Candyman, to create that deep sense of evil, while creating characters that the audience actually care about”.

Doctor Who – The Companion Chronicles: The First Doctor Volume 2

Big Finish have dropped four brand new adventures, as seen and told by those closest to the First Doctor: his companions.

Out today, and starring Maureen O’Brien as Vicki, Peter Purves as Steven Taylor, Anneke Wills as Polly, and Elliot Chapman as Ben Jackson, Doctor Who – The Companion Chronicles: The First Doctor Volume 2 is available now. These four new stories come with additional exclusive download extras from Big Finish!

1. Fields of Terror by John Pritchard

The TARDIS has brought the Doctor back to Revolutionary France, a place that’s always fascinated him. But this time he, along with Steven and Vicki, are drawn into a devastated land, caught between the soldiers who are burning all before them and a monstrous shape that follows in their wake.

2. Across the Darkened City by David Bartlett

On the planet Shade, The Chaons, an invading race of strange, amorphous creatures that ravenously absorb energy, have reduced the city there to a desolate ruin. Separated from the Doctor and Vicki, Steven has to join forces with an unexpected ally to find his way back to the TARDIS. Ahead, lies a nightmare journey through the dark – a test of endurance and trust.

3. The Bonfires of the Vanities by Una McCormack

When the Doctor, Polly, and Ben arrive in Lewes in the late 1950s, they’re just in time to celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night. But there’s no fun on the streets tonight – the town is in the grip of fear. There are imps on the loose in Lewes, the Bonfire Boys are on the march, and nobody is safe from the fire.

4. The Plague of Dreams by Guy Adams

“Pray welcome, one and all, to this, a fantasy in two acts, presented, most humbly, for your pleasure. We bring you drama and magic, angels and demons, a tale of mysterious plague… of nightmares made flesh… of a war fought both in this world and those immeasurably distant. A war, in fact, fought through the mists of time itself. It will make you gasp! It will make you weep! It may even make some of you wake-up…”

With this release you can also pick up some exclusive extras! All four scripts for these stories will be downloadable as PDFs, as well as a 38 minute music suite from composer Rob Harvey. Have a taster below, as Rob takes you through how he recreated the original sound of the First Doctor’s adventures:

“Working with Rob on this set has been a highlight, not only with his input to the recording process – where he even attended a couple of the studio days and joined the rest of us with shouting on the wild tracks! – but in hearing his music work as it came together,” producer Ian Atkins tells us, “I used to buy movie soundtrack CDs by the score, and this fits beautifully alongside them.”

“One benefit of this release is getting a companion’s perspective on a new story, which gives a wonderful human colour to events, be it from Vicki encountering the darkness of history at its worst, to Polly finding herself stranded and alone with only a shifty thespian for company. We’re lucky to have such a talented cast prepared to really push themselves, and directors who can work so well with each character. This set of stories seeing the light of day is something I’m hugely proud of.”

This release, and the extras, are available for £20 and £15 on CD and Download, but only until the end of July. And you can download Part 1 of The Bonfires of the Vanities with a code, if you sign up to the Big Finish newsletter.

The Lives of Captain Jack

John Barrowman comes back to life in his own adventures from the Worlds of Doctor Who

Starring John Barrowman, with guest stars Camille Coduri, Russell Tovey, Katy Manning, Sarah Douglas and Alexander Vlahos, The Lives of Captain Jack is out now from Big Finish!

“Life is about choices, who gets to live, who gets to die, who we love, who we hate… our choices shape the future of the universe.”

Exploring chapters of Jack’s life not seen on-screen, The Lives of Captain Jack follows John Barrowman’s character from straight after Season 1 of Doctor Who‘s 2005 revival, in a Dalek-ravaged Earth, to a passionate night out with Alonso Frame (played by Russell Tovey), his origins at the Time Agency, and meeting his match with Jackie Tyler (Camille Coduri).

Writer Guy Adams gives us a little teaser, “Most of us haven’t lived as interesting a life as Captain Jack Harkness. Thankfully. If James and I had been forced to dramatise the most exciting periods of our own lives, at least two of the discs would have been about cats. Writing dialogue for a national institution is always a joy too, like scripting a lither, sexier Royal Albert Hall as it leaps around the Universe bedazzling the natives.”

Writer/producer James Goss fills us in on John Barrowman’s japes in the studio: “John Barrowman is like working with a very professional force of nature who at any moment will do something naughty. We were sharing the studios with an incredibly posh, high brow Radio 4 drama who watched as he and Camille chased each other round the green room before he dashed off to buy our whole team ice cream. After John danced back into the studio, Sir Simon Callow muttered, “No-one ever buys me an ice cream”.

“John is a proper celebrity – he went on Loose Women, fell off a stool, and still came to studio on time, giggling at having broken the internet. When we were recording down in Cardiff Bay, he was spotted by a devastatingly attractive young Doctor Who fan who couldn’t believe what was happening. John lit up and not only made the guy’s day, but also made sure his friends had a brilliant time. That’s John – everyone loves him.”

This four disc boxset (directed by Scott Handcock), is now available at £25 for CD and £20 Download. And because you can never have enough Captain Jack, Torchwood – the Conspiracy, as The Listener’s Title of the Month, is available at £2.99 as a download!
