Season 3 kicks off with The Umbrella Academy meeting the Sparrow Academy as it looks like our heroes have arrived in an alternative/parallel future following their Season 2 adventures in Dallas. Strap yourself in as we hit warp speed immediately when the two groups battle in physically surreal ways!
The Sparrow Academy consist of No. 1 – Marcus Hargreeves (Justin Cornwell), No. 2 – Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min), No. 3 – Fei Hargreeves (Britne Oldford), No. 4 – Alphonso Hargreeves (Jake Epstein), No. 5 – Sloane Hargreeves (Genesis Rodriguez), No. 6 – Jayme Hargreeves (Cazzie David), and No. 7 – Christopher Hargreeves – a psykronium cube of unknown origin. The Sparrows are a well-oiled machine in combat unlike The Umbrellas.
During the battle Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) reveals to Klaus (Robert Sheehan) that after seeing The Umbrella Academy in Dallas he decided to adopt different children when the time came therefore changing the timeline and bringing The Sparrow Academy into existence and making The Umbrella Academy a timeline anomaly. After finding themselves at the losing end of the battle (although the Sparrows are wary of Viktor’s (Elliot Page) powers the Umbrellas retreat to familiar surroundings, The Hotel Obsidian, to regroup and work out what is going on!
Verdict: 8.5 out of 10. An action-packed opener that cleverly highlights just why we like The Umbrella Academy. By holding up a mirror to them via The Sparrow Academy it allows the characters to re-establish themselves in the most bonkers was possible. No time is wasted here, the story flows thick and fast and fluid leaving you wanting more. Luckily this is Netflix so get your binge on! Oh yeah… beware the glowing red ball!
