In The Boys Season 3 Ep. 3: Barbary Coast, Homelander (Antony Starr) discovers that his rant from the previous episode has had a positive impact on his approval ratings – especially amongst rural white men, This boost results in Vought’s executives being more lenient toward Homelander’s actions!
Meanwhile the final of American Hero has arrived. Homelander pressures Starlight (Erin Moriarty) into choosing her ex-boyfriend Supersonic (Miles Gaston Villanueva) to be the winner. The Deep (Chace Crawford) is also announced as rejoining The Seven. Homelander follows this up by announcing that he and Starlight are in love resulting in Starlight having to play along in the “showmance” for the cameras.
Elsewhere, The Boys confront Grace Mallory (Laila Robins) about her links to Soldier Boy. She reveals Payback was deployed to assist the CIA in fighting a communist government in Nicaragua during the Cold War but were killed during an attack by Nicaraguan and Russian soldiers, with Soldier Boy being killed by a Russian superweapon. We also see that this battle also disfigured Black Noir (played by Fritzy-Klevans Destine in the flashbacks) and made him mute.
Verdict: 8/10. Another cracking episode. I’m slightly disappointed about the Black Noir reveal as this changes a pretty huge reveal from the comics – instead he is now basically Snake Eyes from G.I. Joe. The Soldier Boy mystery deepens as does Homelander’s mental stability!
