In Cobra Kai Season 3 Ep. 6: King Cobra we get more background on John Kreese’s (Martin Kove) younger years (Barrett Carnahan) and learn how he was selected for Special Forces in Vietnam under Captain Turner (Terry Serpico). We also get to see Karate Kid 3’s villain Terry Silver (the younger version played here by Nick Marini) in action alongside Kreese in Vietnam.
In the modern day, Kreese is using the Special Forces recruitment process to recruit various athletes to Cobra Kai including Kyler (Joe Seo) and Brucks (Bo Mitchell) the two boys who bullied Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) in Season 1. During their try out Hawk destroys Brucks and beats him into a bloody pulp.
Meanwhile, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) attempt to file a restraining order against Kreese, but already learn that Kreese filed one against Amanda. This leads to more fuel being put onto teh fire between them!
Whilst all this is going on Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) helps Johnny (William Zabka) take photos in order to build up his Facebook profile so he can impress for Ali, only to inadvertently meet Tory in the process. Home trutrhs are discussed and later Miguel calls Johnny out on his hypocrisy about abandoning people after helping them. This leads Johnny to send Ali a heartfelt message on Facebook.
Verdict: 10. Good writers build and weave in all that has gone before and this episode does that. The threads from Karate Kid 3 begin to be sown into Kreese’s backstory whilst in the present Johnny’s realisation of what he has done with his life makes an interesting commentary on how we use social media today!
