Pub Trivia No 1: Contract commitments to Magnum, P.I. famously cost Selleck the role of Indiana Jones. In the show’s final season, the producers gave a nod to his sacrifice with the episode “Legend of the Lost Art”, which parodied the film.
An array of guest stars appeared on the show including Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct), Frank Sinatra (Frank F**king Sinatra!), Scatman Crothers (The Shining, Scat Cat in The Aristocats), Tyne Daly (Cagney and Lacey), Ted Danson (Cheers), James Doohan (Star Trek), Ernest Borgnine (Airwolf), Patrick Macnee (The Avengers), June Lockhart (Lassie, Lost in Space), Annie Potts (Ghostbusters), Jill St. John (Diamonds Are Forever), Marcia Wallace (Edna Krabappel in The Simpsons), Ian McShane (Lovejoy, Game of Thrones) and Angela Lansbury (as Jessica Fletcher in A Murder, She Wrote tie in)
It was created by Donald P. Bellisario (Airwolf, Quantum Leap, Tales of the Gold Monkey, NCIS) and Glen A. Larson – who accounted for 513 hours of television and 21 combined seasons from 1976-88, with shows Magnum P.I. Quincy, Knight Rider and The Fall Guy.
Larson based the unseen playboy novelist character Robin Masters on best selling novelist Harold Robbins. Robbins was one of the first novelists to be prominently featured in gossip magazines earning him the title of “The World’s First Rock Star Author”. Orson Welles provided the voice of Robin Masters, whose face was never seen in the show.
Pub Trivia No 2: Larry Manetti was the only regular cast member without a moustache.
The original theme tune was written by Ian Freebairn-Smith and only lasted 11 episodes. It was replaced with the iconic more uptempo theme tune by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter (composers of iconic TV themes such as The A Team and The Rockford Files).
