So Marvel’s What If…? has finally arrived. The idea behind it being that following the creation of the multiverse in Loki‘s first season finale, we now get to explore, through the eyes of Uatu The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), the various alternate timelines of the multiverse in which major moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films occur differently.
In this case we get to see what happens in a world where Peggy Cater (Hayley Atwell) takes the super soldier serum – basically everything happens the same only Carter stops the sabotage, but Steve (Josh Keaton) gets shot and injured. With seconds to spare and the experiment failing, she steps in to take his place.
Once super-soldiered up, Carter is grounded by John Flynn (Bradley Whitford) as she is not qualified and a woman! We then get Carter and the Howling Commandos out on missions with Steve Rogers in a weaponized suit of armour for known as the “Hydra Stomper.”
We get to the train again, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) nearly falls but is saved by Carter -“You nearly ripped my arm off” he proclaims. Instead, it is Steve who appears to be blown up. We then get the big Hydra base finale, Steve isn’t dead, the Red Skull (Ross Marquand) unleashes an interdimensional tentacled creature (Shuma-Gorath?) which kills him.
To save the day Carter sacrifices herself to force the creature back to its dimension. Almost 70 years later, the portal is reopened. Carter emerges from it and meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner).
Verdict: 6/10. Whilst the attention to detail is present it feels like the whole episode is squashed and compacted together. A slightly longer running time would have helped this especially when you own the channel your show is being shown on. Instead, it feels like we are watching the highlights of a story that’s main point is that if Peggy Carter did get the super soldier serum not much would have changed.
