Cult TV Essentials: Blade – The Series

Spinning out of the Blade trilogy of movies came the 2006 series of the same name. It launched with the two-hour pilot “House of Chthon” which directed by Peter O’Fallon from a script by David S. Goyer (who wrote all three Blade movies) and Geoff Johns. The series lasted for twelve episodes and did huge ratings before being cancelled for how much it cost to produce each episode.

As House of Chthonwas begins Krista Starr (Jill Wagner) has returned from military service in Iraq to learn that her twin brother, Zack (David Kopp), has died under mysterious circumstances. From her investigation she learns that Zack had been acting as a “familiar” – a kind of indentured servant of vampires, who agrees to do their bidding in the hopes his “master” will eventually reward him with eternal life.

In continuing her investigation Krista runs into Blade (Sticky Fingaz) as well as a powerful vampire named Marcus Van Sciver (Neil Jackson). Marcus is a high-ranking member of the House of Chthon and the man who killed Zack. Marcus takes an interest in Krista and wants to turn her into a vampire. This results in him injecting her with his blood. Krista is then approached by Blade, who injects her with the same serum he uses to control his own vampire instincts, and offers her a chance to help him avenge her brother’s death and bring down Marcus and the House of Chthon, and revealed that Zack was trying to do a sting operation with Blade. The two form a reluctant partnership that plays out over the twelve episodes.
