Created originally for Milestone Media/DC Comics by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle, and Michael Davis, the animated series Static Shock ran for four seasons (52 episodes) between 2000-2004.
The show follows fourteen-year-old Virgil Hawkins (voiced by Phil LaMarr) who lives with his older sister Sharon (voiced by Michele Morgan), and his widowed father Robert (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) in Dakota City. He attends high school with his best friend Richie Foley (voiced Jason Marsden), and the girl he likes Frieda Goren (voiced by Danica McKellar).
A gang leader named Wade (Omar Gooding) tries to recruit Virgil but he is hesitant because his mother died in an exchange of gunfire between gangs. Wade eventually leads Virgil to a restricted area for a fight against school bully F-Stop and his crew. the fight is interrupted by police helicopters and during the commotion chemical containers explode. This event becomes known as “The Big Bang” as this explosion causes mutations among the people in the vicinity.
As a result of the explosion, Virgil obtains the ability to create, generate, absorb, and control electricity and magnetism. He decides to become a superhero known as “Static”. The gas also gives others in the area (later known as “Bang Babies”) their own powers, and several of them become supervillains who battle Static.
