Journey to the West – Legends of the Monkey King debuted in early 2000 and was a Chinese cartoon show produced by China Central Television that like Monkey before it was based on the novel Journey to the West. It consisted of twenty-six episodes (fifty-two segments).
The storyline follows Sun Wukong (aka The Monkey King – voiced by Shen Xiaoqian and Zhang Hanyu in the Chinese version and Thor Bishopric in the English language version) who was born from a magic stone and has since been imprisoned underneath a mountain for five centuries for his mischief in the heavens.
One day, the Guanyin told Monkey that the Monk Tang Sanzang (aka Tripitaka – voiced by Qiao Zhen in the Chinese version and Terrence Scammell in the English language version) will set him free and Monkey will join him on a pilgrimage from China to India.
The next day, Tang Sanzang came and set Monkey free, and the two started their Journey to the west. Along the way, they meet two new friends, Zhu Bajie (aka Pigsy – voiced by Chengyu Zhu and Mark Camacho in the English language version) and Sha Wujing (aka Sandy – voiced by Liu Feng and A.J. Henderson in the English language version) who joins them on the journey; together, they face many dangers, demons, sorcerers and each other!
