Katharine Isabelle was born on November 2nd 1981 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the daughter of emmy award winning art and production designer Graeme Murray. Her brother is actor turned journalist Joshua Murray (The X Files).
Isabelle’s acting career began in 1989 with parts in the films Cousins, Cold Front, and a role in the television series MacGyver. Other TV roles included Neon Rider (1990), The Ray Bradbury Theatre (1992), Children of the Dust (1995), Lonesome Dove: The Series (1995), Goosebumps (1996), Madison (1997), The X-Files (1998), and Da Vinci’s Inquest (1998).
In 1992, she played the role of Erica Sanderson in Knight Moves. In 1998 her role as disturbed teen Lindsay Clark in Disturbing Behavior brought her firmly onto the Cult Faction radar.
In 2000, Isabelle took the lead role in Ginger Snaps and her cult status blew up. She returned for two further Ginger Snaps movies (Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning). She noted that when she went to a pharmacy after a day of shooting Ginger Snaps and the people there thought she’d been beaten up since she was still covered in fake blood.
In 2001 she portrayed Tia in Bones and Paige Fleming in Turning Paige (2001). In 2002 she played Tanya Francke opposite Al Pacino in Insomnia.
Further roles on film and TV included Smallville (2003) and Freddy vs. Jason, (2003) – which she reportedly hated after director Ronny Yu failed to tell her she would be expected to do the nude scenes, this led to friction between the two during shooting when Isabelle made it clear she would not do the nude scenes.
I was expecting more from the film, but it’s just the same old-same old. Running around and screaming “No Freddy, don’t.”
She also appeared in Falling Angels (2003), On the Corner (2003), Spooky House (2004), The Last Casino (2004), Everything’s Gone Green (2006), Supernatural (2007), Rampage (2009), Favourite People List (2009), Frankie and Alice (2010) and Hard Ride to Hell (2010).
I have some friends who are just too scared to see it [American Mary]. My brother has seen it at least six times and still can’t watch one scene in particular, but my mother made it through the whole thing without any problem at all. My dad was the very first person I went to with the script – to make sure I wasn’t crazy for loving this. I knew if my dad liked it, it was good.
In 2012, Isabelle starred in the popular horror film American Mary, which earned her special mention at the Austin Fantastic Fest, Festival Trophy Award for Best Actress, Special Award for Best Actress, Fright Meter Award for Best Actress, and Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Leading Actress. More recently she has appeared in 13 Eerie (2013),Torment (2013), and Laurence & Holloman (2013) which earned her a Leo Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Motion Picture.
