Cult Movie Essentials: Teenage Gang Debs (1966)

This low budget but high attitude flick is directed by Sande N. Johnsen and focuses on Terry (Diane Conti), a girl from Manhattan (and member of the Manhattan Golden Falcons gang) who moves into a neighborhood that is the turf of the Brooklyn Rebels, a female teenage gang. She quickly rises to the top of the gang, and sets her sights on Johnny (John Batis)– the leader of the local neighborhood tough guys and makes a number of enemies in the process. Teenage Gang Debs remains a cultural reflection of cinema’s attempts at being cool and relevant whilst at the same time taking bold steps in showing females in non-traditional roles.
