Cult Movie Essentials: Gambling With Souls (1936)

For 1936, Gambling With Souls is a hard hitting movie – focusing on young girls who are cheated in rigged gambling games and then forced into prostitution to pay off their debts.

In particular we meet Mae Miller (Martha Chapin) who wants the finer things in life and feels her husband John (Robert Frazer), a doctor, cannot provide for her. She begins to gamble in order to get herself some spending money but winds up deep in debt and is reduced  to selling herself to clear it.
