Trancers (1984)

Trancers is a 1984 science fiction film directed by Charles Band, it blends elements of noir, action, and time travel, resulting in a unique entry in the science fiction landscape of the 1980s.

The movie is set in a dystopian future, where the city of Los Angeles has become “Angel City.” In this bleak future, humanity is threatened by a sinister force known as “Trancers,” humans who have been turned into zombie-like killers by a malevolent psychic named Martin Whistler (played by Michael Stefani). Whistler has developed the ability to turn people into Trancers, who are highly susceptible to his control, effectively creating an army of mindless followers.

The protagonist of the story is Jack Deth (played by Tim Thomerson), a hard-boiled detective with a no-nonsense attitude, who specializes in hunting down Trancers. Deth is haunted by his past, particularly the loss of his wife to a Trancer, which fuels his relentless pursuit of justice. The film opens with Deth tracking down a Trancer in Angel City, a mission that ends with the suspect’s demise but raises the stakes for Deth’s ongoing battle against Whistler.

The plot takes a twist when Deth is summoned by the ruling council of Angel City. They inform him that Whistler has escaped into the past—specifically to Los Angeles in 1985—and has begun systematically eliminating the ancestors of the council members, effectively erasing them from existence in the future. To stop Whistler, Deth must travel back in time, using a drug that allows him to transfer his consciousness into the body of one of his ancestors. Deth inhabits the body of his ancestor Phil Deth, a journalist, in 1985 Los Angeles.

In 1985, Deth meets Leena (played by Helen Hunt), a young woman who becomes his ally. Leena is initially sceptical of Deth’s wild claims about time travel and Trancers, but she soon becomes convinced after witnessing the effects of the Trancer attacks firsthand. Together, Deth and Leena work to track down Whistler and prevent him from carrying out his plan. Their quest takes them through the gritty streets of Los Angeles, filled with dangers and close encounters with Trancers.

The climax of the film involves a showdown between Deth and Whistler, who has taken over the body of a powerful police officer in 1985. The battle is intense, blending action with the film’s sci-fi elements. Ultimately, Deth succeeds in defeating Whistler, but not without cost. The movie ends with Deth choosing to remain in 1985 with Leena, rather than return to his bleak future.

Trancers was released to a limited audience in 1984, but it quickly gained a cult following, especially among fans of low-budget science fiction films. The film’s unique blend of genres—combining elements of film noir, time travel, and action—set it apart from other sci-fi movies of the time. While it didn’t achieve mainstream success, Trancers was praised for its imaginative story and Tim Thomerson’s charismatic performance.

Critics were generally positive, noting that while the film was clearly a low-budget production, it managed to overcome its limitations through creativity and a strong narrative. The character of Jack Deth became particularly popular, with his deadpan humour and tough-guy persona becoming a defining aspect of the film’s appeal.

Over the years, Trancers has been reappraised as a classic of 1980s B-movie cinema. It spawned several sequels, with Thomerson reprising his role as Jack Deth, and even led to comic book adaptations. The film’s influence can be seen in various sci-fi and action movies that followed, particularly in its innovative use of time travel as a plot device.

In summary, Trancers remains a beloved cult classic, remembered for its inventive storyline, memorable characters, and the distinctive style that Charles Band brought to the genre. While it may not have been a blockbuster, its legacy endures among fans of 1980s science fiction.
