This week’s episode begins with Lieutenant Talla Keyali (Jessica Szohr) returning from shore leave as the crew receive a strange signal from the planet named Narran 1 which was always believed to be uninhabitable. They travel to the planet to investigate the signal. Upon arrival, the away mission team of Captain Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane), Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), Lieutenant Commander. Bortus (Peter Macon), Lieutenant Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes) and Lt. Talla, travel down to the planet to investigate.
Upon arrival the planet seems a lot like Earth, with the away team discovering a high school that leads to many other strange scenarios that should not be possible on the barren planet. During these various moments each member of the away team has a brush with death, culminating in a Kaylon ship stopping an inch away from destroying The Orville.
Meanwhile back on The Orville, Lieutenant Commander. John LaMarr (J Lee) receives a message from Talla. She is waiting to be picked up from shore leave. LaMarr is confused because if that really is Talla then who is on the away team?
Verdict: 7/10. This is very much a classic TNG episode that needs to be unravelled. The link to the older episode is very clever and I look forward to seeing how that progresses in future episodes. A bit more of an ending is what was needed here, it just felt a bit quick. over and done. I think more could have been made of what happened and the crew’s reaction to it.
