First Kill, created by Victoria Schwab and based on her short story of the same name, introduces us to teenage vampire Juliette Fairmont (played by Sarah Catherine Hook, as seen in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It). Juliette needs to make her first kill so she can take her place among her powerful vampire family, including her mother Margot (Elizabeth Mitchell, as seen in V, Lost, Once Upon a Time, The Expanse) and her sister Elinor (played by Gracie Dzienny, as seen in Jupiter’s Legacy, and Bumblebee).
Juliette has a huge crush on the new girl at her school Calliope Burns (Imani Lewis, as seen in Vampires vs. the Bronx, The Equalizer) but in such a strange “twist of fate” Calliope is a vampire hunter from a family of celebrated vampire slayers. Neither knows of the others legacy as the two get drawn closer together. Then one night at a party…
Verdict: 6/10. Whilst acted well enough the show falls down on the fact that it is nothing we have not seen before. The fact that she is named Juliette I guess is meant to add a sprinkling of tragedy but instead we are left with a Buffy/Angel dynamic for the new generation. First Kill has a chance to develop but it needs to throw off the shackles of all the Twilights, Diaries, True Bloods and Slayers that have come before it.
