What makes The Orville Season 3 Ep. 2: Shadow Realms exciting to begin with is that Brannon Braga and Andre Bormanis – two of Star Trek’s most hallowed creative influences are back to help the show which “Out Star Trek’s” Star Trek for the fourth time.
As we join The Orville this week the crew are taking part in diplomatic negotiations with the Krill to access a previously unknown region of space known as the Shadow Realms. The Krill warn that this are of space is dangerous and inhabited by demons, but The Orville crew view their opinions as being based on religious superstition. Also, Claire (Penny Johnson Jerald) reunites with her ex-husband, Admiral Christie (James Read) who is assigned to be chief diplomat for their mission.
The crew later investigate s strange space station they find, and during the away mission Admiral Christie becomes infected with something that begins to change him…
Verdict: 8/10. Another cracking episode from The Orville. This episode was basically an Alien/The Fly mash up with James Read’s Admiral Christie deputising for Dr. Seth Brundle. Mysteries are set up well and some threads are left hanging in the background to be picked up in the future.
