With those magical words, 80s children around the world raised their sticks aloft and transformed into He-Man, the valiant defender of his realm…and a television icon was born! Featuring 130 action-packed episodes, a full-length movie, a Christmas special and hours of bonus features, He-Man and the Master of the Universe: The Complete Collection captures one of the most beloved animated series of the 1980s!
Inspired by the wildly popular toys, the original He- Man series became a cultural phenomenon starring He-Man, Orko, Skeletor, Man-at-Arms and many more unforgettable characters. He-Man made his debut in 1981 with Mattel’s release of the original “Masters of the Universe” 5.5-inch action-figure toy line. The cartoon which was produced by Filmation didn’t appear on our screens until 1983. TV shows and movies had produced spin off toys before, but never in reverse, this was a first. By 1984 the He-Man franchise had earned over a billion dollars for Mattel.

At its height, He-Man was the highest-rated kids’ show in America, the show’s premiere brought in nine million viewers in the United States alone. It was broadcast in 37 countries and aired on Children’s ITV from 1983 to 1989.
The cartoon features early script-writing work from J. Michael Straczynski, later the creator of Babylon 5; Paul Dini and Brynne Stephens, who went on to write acclaimed episodes of Batman: The Animated Series; Beast Wars story editor Larry DiTillio; and David Wise, later the head-writer of the TV version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The original He-Man action figures came packaged with a minicomic which gave a bit of backstory. DC Comics Presents saw Superman teaming up with He-Man in issue #47 in a story titled, “From Eternia–with Death!”.
In 2021 Kevin Smith created a new adaptation for Netflix called Masters of the Universe: Revelation with a voiceover cast including Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alicia Silverstone.
She-Ra: Princess of Power – The Complete Series is also being released by Fabulous Films on 25th April. This spin off from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was aimed primarily at a young female audience to complement He-Man’s popularity with young males and followed the story of He-Man’s twin sister Princess Adora/She-Ra.
