Directed by Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan, Train to Busan 2: Peninsula), Hellbound is a six episode series that is based on Sang-ho’s webtoon of the same name. It stars Yoo Ah-in, Kim Hyun-joo, Park Jeong-min, Won Jin-ah and Yang Ik-june. It tells the story of supernatural beings appearing out of nowhere to condemn people to Hell.
In Episode 1 we see a man enjoying a coffee in café in Seoul; the man receives a message on his phone informing him he only has five minutes left to live. He soon begins to get nervous then suddenly three smoky supernatural beings appear and begin chasing him. They then catch him and concentrate their energies on him and basically burn him alive/send him to hell as a crowd stand back and film it all on their phones.
Soon the events are all over the news with speculation rife as to where these creatures come from. From this confusion a religious group the New Truth Society appear led by ‘Chairman’ Jung Jinsu (Yoo Ah-in) and begin to gain influence on the population preaching that this id God’s new judgement of us, their influence grows especially amongst those who like a good conspiracy.
We then go into detective mode as we follow those who investigate the occurrences including detective Jin Kyunghun (Yang Ik-joon), a man coping with a family tragedy and look after his daughter, Hee-jung (Lee Re).
Verdict: 6.5/10. Whilst the CGI and occasional overacting takes you out of the story slightly, the overall themes of the episode and how it is delivered keep you interested for the episode. It does get slow at times but knowing Sang-ho is involved sways me slightly as I always have big expectations from him and he always delivers.
