Based on James A. Michener’s best selling novel of the same name, Centennial aired on NBC from 1978 -79. Michener’s first book Tales of the South Pacific (1947) was adapted into the hit Broadway musical South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein. With a budget of $25 million Centennial was one of the longest and most ambitious television projects ever attempted at the time. The series employed four directors, five cinematographers, and featured over 100 speaking parts.
Centennial was nominated at the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes where it was up for Best Television Series and Best Actor in a Television Series (Richard Chamberlain).
