Van Helsing was nominated at the Stinkers Bad Movies Awards for Worst Film. Kate Beckinsale was nominated for Worst Actress and Worst Female Fake Accent and Richard Roxburgh won Worst Male Fake Accent. Though compared to Oliver Stone’s Alexander which got a total of 11 nominations, it did ok. Despite being critically-panned, the film grossed over $300 million worldwide and has gone on to develop a cult following.
The character Van Helsing was inspired by the Dutch vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Stoker named the character after himself – Bram being a shortening for of Abraham. Stephen Sommers claimed in an interview that he changed the main character’s name from Abraham to Gabriel, as he did not think he could have a lead character named Abraham. But it has also been reported that Abraham was changed to Gabriel so that the production company could hold certain rights to the character.
The people at Industrial Light & Magic (the visual effects company started up by George Lucas in 1975) jokingly established the Stephen Sommers Scale to determine the difficulty of creating a particular scene. The four parts of the scale, from lowest to highest, are “What the Shot Needs”, “What the Computers Can Handle”, “Oh, God, the Computer’s About To Crash”, and finally “What Stephen Wants.”
In December it was announced producer James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) and director Julius Avery (Son of a Gun, Overlord) are set to work on a new horror/thriller set in the world of Van Helsin.
It stars Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, Richard Roxsburgh, David Wenham, Will Kemp, Kevin J. O’Connor, and Shuler Hensley.
