Tongue-in-cheek time travel tomfoolery is a plenty in William J. Stribling’s The Speed of Time. Furious fast lazer shootouts open the fray and gets our adrenaline pumping as John Hennigan (Boone: The Bounty Hunter) enters our screens to display his parkour and combat skills as Johnny Killfire! We witness Killfire boldly battle his way through to a device that opens up some kind of time portal which he is shot through.
This precious portal transports Killfire back to his wedding day in 2020 where he meets his younger self (Sean Marquette aka Johnny Atkins from The Goldbergs/Schooled) who cannot believe he will end up looing like his physically more impressive self – apparently “stemcells” are the reason! Confirms his identity to his younger self in one of the most truest time travel identifcation processes of all time: “Tell me about something only I would know” and the two begin their adventure!
It turns out the pair must stop the TimeBorgs from getting their hands on an app that breaks the space-time continuum by delivering pizzas into the past…before they were even ordered!
As a short movie the plot and pace remains tight and leaves you with no choice but to stay involved with Killfire’s quest. Hennigan delivers a Killfire who could easily be a descendant of his earlier Boone character and demonstartes he has mastered this style of comedy. This almost seems like a proof of concept movie or a TV pilot, and if it is, the foundation which it has been bulit on can be built upon and developed with great ease.
With great characteristation and banter between the two Johnnys and the additional appearence of Nic Nemeth (WWE’s Dolph Ziggler) as Orville, The Speed of Time has something for old and young viewers as well as a few time travel tropes and references to keep the die-hards interested.
Verdict: 7/10. A fun glimpse of tongue-in-cheek time travel (in a similar vein to Futureboy) that has more detailed depth than you would think for such a short run time. It takes the best literary devices of the genre and brings them through a brightly lit portal to introduce us to Johnny Killfire, a character who clearly has more adventures ahead of him that would be fun to watch.
