Episode 5 of Zomboat! is the penultimate episode of Season 1 and it gave the audience a chance to catch their breath before the grand finale. Instead of the fast paced action we have gotten used to we take a turn at some character development.
As the episode begins Zombie Jude (Callum Kerr) is still following them and Jo (Cara Theobold) is growing more concerned about his obsession with her. How they have played subtly through each episode is very intersting and I feel there may be a big payoff on this in the final episode.
Also it turns out that Kat (Leah Brotherhead) and Sunny (Hamza Jeetooa) have shared a drunken kiss and fumble although neither are 100% sure what happened. The genius of this occurring off camera leaves the audience without having to sit through predictable sitcom banter and instead leaves us as unsure about what has happened as the characters – and as the awkwardness between them plays out we get to sit in the room and feel it with them.
The relationship between Jo and Kat also becomes strained and following another argument Jo jumps ship when she finds another boat. Amar (Ryan McKen) joins her so that he can finally get a turn at driving a boat. Then during a fuel stop Kat and Sunny meet Lawrence (Douglas McFerran) and issues soon arise when the have to pay him for the fuel…
Verdict: 7/10 As a stand alone episode this is not the best one the series has to offer but as part of a series framework it work expertly in providing our characters with more edges and sets the table for the chaos to come in the final episode of the series.
