Terminator: Dark Fate crawled out of the remains of Terminator: Genisys and in a bid to save the franchise decided to ignore everything that came after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. What could of been an interesting journey into how events played out following the previous films instead turned into yet another retread of set pieces we have seen many times before.
The initial opening with Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor with her son John basically shits all over the character Sarah was. The Sarah we knew would never have let that happen but well the writers needed a reason to turn Sarah into the character we meet later so they just decided to do what they did despite it making no sense at all. One dimensional quick fix writing.
As the main narrative unfolds you pretty much hit the ground running and it is pure #AAF. There are some great set pieces with Gabriel Luna managing to be menacing and sinister as the new Terminator. Natalia Reyes as Dani Ramos is also a welcome addition to the Terminator franchise. Her transformation through the film is not unlike Hamilton’s decaders earlier. Mackenzie Davis is effective in the role of Grace, the defender sent back in time to defend Dani but her character is basically a Mary Sue that they soon run out of ideas for. Arnie is in it too but not too much as it is made very clear that women are more than capable of looking after themselves.
What plot there is you have probably already guessed and the twists in that plot stand out more than you would expect them too, instead sit back and enjoy crazy chases, vicious fights, a grizzled F-Bomb dropping Sarah Connor, and the biggest display of girl power this side of the Spice Girls.
Verdict: 6/10. A fun violent romp that is punching above its weight. Don’t go in expecting too much just enjoy the ride.
