Echoes of the Passed is a short film written by Tony Sands. The film concerns a mysterious professor, his assistant and two pea brained AV techs while they try to spend the night in a supposedly haunted house. At only 20 mins long including credits, Echoes of the Passed manages to pack quite a punch.

The film starts off more lighthearted in tone as the two techs argue about pizza and other unimportant issues. The cause of the haunting quickly arises however, when it is revealed that it was the professor who, as a teenager, accidentally killed his baby sister and caused his parents to die. This revelation is built up to slowly, as the Professor’s relation to the haunting being unravelled piece by piece.
The acting in this film is great, with all 4 of the actors portraying their roles well. The assistant Liz was my personal favourite, as she played a good foil to the AV tech who wanted to blame the Professor for the baby’s death, whereas she comes more from a place of understanding. The script is also well written, with the dialogue feeling grounded and ethereal at the same time.
The film is also shot wonderfully, with the lighting and set design being simple but effective. The lighting allows for an atmosphere to be built and for the story to feel more natural as opposed to having it in a well lit room which would likely rob it of the horror somewhat.
There isn’t much I can say of substance due to the short nature of the film, but overall I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it as it is a prime example of good, unsettling storytelling that doesn’t need to overuse cheap jump scares.
