Say Anything (1989)

It was the film that launched Cameron Crowe’s career as a director and included one scene that would be copied and parodied forever!  In Say Anything we meet Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), an aspiring kickboxer who falls for valedictorian Diane Court (Ione Sky) at their high school graduation ceremony. Lloyd lives with his sister Constance (John’s real life sister Joan Cusack), a single mother, and has no plans for his future. Diane has had a sheltered academic upbringing and lives with her doting divorced father Jim (John Mahoney), who owns the retirement home where she works. Unfortunately Diane is due to attend a fellowship in England at the end of the summer.

Lloyd and Diane grow close and have an intimate relationship although Lloyd’s musician friend Corey (Lili Taylor), who has never gotten over her cheating ex-boyfriend, Joe (Loren Dean), warns him to take care of Diane.Whilsy Diane’s Dad Jim wants her to break up with Lloyd as he is not appropriate. This results in Diane informing Lloyd that she wants to stop seeing him and concentrate on her studies. Devastated over the breakup, Lloyd seeks advice from Corey, who tells him to “be a man”…
