Powers Booth passes away at the age of 68 years old

It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that Powers Booth passed away at the age of 68 years old from natural causes on Sunday.

Boothe was born on 1st June 1948 on a farm in Snyder, Scurry County, Texas, and was the youngest of three boys. He was named after a friend of his father’s that was killed in World War II. He went onto graduate from Southwest Texas State University (Lambda Chi Alpha) and joined the repertory company of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, with roles in Henry IV, Part 2 (portraying Henry IV of England), Troilus and Cressida, and others. His New York stage debut was in the 1974 Lincoln Center production of Richard III. Five years later, his Broadway theater debut came in a starring role in the one-act play Lone Star, written by James McLure.

In 1980, Boothe starred in the role of Whalen in the TV series Skag, but it was his role as the Rev. Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones that put him on the map and he won an Emmy for his performance. When he collected the award, however, he had to cross the picket line of a Screen Actors Guild strike to receive it.

He was the only actor to cross the picket line:

“This is either the most courageous moment of my career or the stupidest… I also thought long and hard whether or not I would attend, but I came here because this is America and one must do what one believes. I believe in the Academy. I also believe in my fellow actors in their stand.”

Many roles followed that established Boothe has a Cult icon including Red Dawn, The Emerald Forest, Philip Marlowe – Private Eye, Extreme Prejudice, Wild Card, Tombstone, Blue Sky, Sudden Death, Con Air, Justice League, Sin City, Justice League Unlimited, Superman: Brainiac Attacks, Deadwood, 24, Turok, Ben 10: Alien Force , McGruber, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Mutant Species, The Avengers, Hatfields & McCoys, Hitman: Absolution, Nashville, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I’ve been fortunate in my career to have the opportunity to pick and choose the parts I play. I’ve also been lucky to always be involved with quality actors, quality directors, quality writers.”

Boothe’s friend and fellow actor Beau Bridges tweeted a tribute to the late actor on Sunday:

‘It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband,’ Bridges wrote.

Powers’ spokesperson Karen Samfilippo said a private service will be held in Texas, and a memorial celebration in Boothe’s honor is being considered for a future date.

She also said that donations can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which honors the nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need.

Boothe is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Pam, and their two children Parisse and Preston Boothe.
