Warren Murphy

Cult Faction must sadly report that legendary writer Warren B. Murphy passed away on September 4th 2015 at his home in Virginia Beach, U.S.A.

Murphy is most well known for being a co-creator (along with Richard Sapir) of The Destroyer – a series of paperback novels about a U.S. government operative named Remo WilliamsThe first novel was published in 1971, although the manuscript was completed on June 25, 1963. The main characters were adapted to film in 1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. The film series is being adapted a second time; on this occasion, it will simply be called The Destroyer and will be directed by Shane Black.

Murphy was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on September 13th 1933. He worked in journalism and politics until launching the Destroyer series with Richard Sapir in 1971. A screenwriter (Lethal Weapon II, The Eiger Sanction) as well as a novelist, Murphy’s work has won a dozen national awards, including multiple Edgars and Shamuses. He has lectured at many colleges and universities.

Murphy was a veteran of the Korean War, some of Murphy’s hobbies include golf, mathematics, opera, and investing. He has served on the board of the Mystery Writers of America, and has been a member of the Screenwriters Guild, the Private Eye Writers of America, the International Association of Crime Writers, and the American Crime Writers League. He is survived by his five children: Deirdre, Megan, Brian, Ardath and Devin.
