Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

I’ll start with saying this would have been a VERY different review if the greatest visionary director of our time had decided to make this. No disrespect to Richard Marquand but if ‘Revenge of the Jedi’ was directed by David Lynch those Ewoks certainly would have been scary little mother f**kers; and those final scenes with Vader, Luke and the Emperor, well we all now how trippy that would have been!

Assuming Lucas would not have allowed any recasting of the main
characters, a whole host of lynch favourites would have been seen in a completely different light. Michael j Anderson, incomprehensible as Nien Nunb. Kyle Machlachan popping up now and then as Bib Fortuna. The log lady…. Mon Mothma???

Anyway back to point at hand. Now although the general consensus is Empire Strikes Back is the superior film of the three, Return of the Jedi brings the prophecy of ‘Star Wars’ to a close. The chosen one does, eventually, bring balance to the force.

I, like my son after me, always saw Vader as the supreme favourite in these character filled films. I wasn’t concerned that he was a baddy as he was so unbelievably bad-ass. The last few fight scenes between said favourite, his son and his boss were something to behold. I am (sadly or not) moved to tears each time I have to watch him die. He was, is and always will be the most powerful Jedi/Sith in the Star Wars universe. I look forward to the new films like everyone else however I always associated Star Wars with Darth Vader, and vice versa.

Now as a kid at the time I didn’t care what anyone said or
admitted we loved those bastard Ewoks – Caravan of Courage, Battle For Endor?

Having said that and also having watched the Ewok movie again a few months back with my children, that shit should and could only be compared with the holiday special. And that my friends is a whole new review/issue altogether. Happy life day everyone. If anyone mentions Lumpy I’m stopping this review altogether, Jesus.

Back to Jedi, the film itself is very chaotic. You have three different battles varying in importance and severity. The finale of the film, Vader battle explained earlier.

The epic falcon battles leading to the tunnel mission being chased by the tie fighters. The long, savage (yes savage, little teddy bears are being slaughtered by the evil empire) and damn right cool battle on endor. A special note and thanks for the 74-z or Endor speeder bike chase. That was very special.

I can’t review anything Star Wars without paying homepage to Ralph Macquarie. The machines we love so much, the characters, the worlds and even weapons were 95 percent designed, drawn and brought to life by this man. I pay homepage as it seems Lucas never really did. Well Thank you Ralph Macquarie, Lawrence Kasdan and
Richard Marquand. It was a tall task to top Empire, but in my opinion it was matched at least.
