Review: Platform 7

Image: ITVX

Platform 7 is a British four-part psychological thriller television series based on the 2019 novel Platform Seven by Louise Doughty, adapted by Paula Milne, and developed by Dancing Ledge Productions for ITVX. It was released on ITVX on 7th December 2023 and is now being shown on ITV.

It stars Jasmine Jobson as Lisa Evans, Toby Regbo as Matthew Goodson, Yaamin Chowdhury as Akash Lockhart, Sacha Parkinson as Melissa, Reece Ritchie as Richard Shale, Tábata Cerezo as Rosaria Diaz, Rhiannon Clements as Izzy, Phil Davis as Edward Warren, and Emily Carey as Ella Warren.

Lisa (Jobson) is stuck in the afterlife wandering Platform 7 of Peterborough Station due to the fact that she committed suicide on that Platform. One night before the anniversary of her death she watches Edward Warren (Davis) take his own life by jumping in front of a train. Lisa seems to have no memory of what happened to her and Edward seems to be the only person to whom she can talk. After her parents and her boyfriend visit the spot of her death on its anniversary, Lisa finds she is able to follow her boyfriend home and finally leave the station. She cannot understand why she would have taken her own life when it seemed so perfect. Flashbacks and revelations soon unfold as Lisa battles to find out what really happened to her.

Whilst I love a supernatural who-done-it all the potential of Platform 7 seems to get lost in its pacing. Each episode is around 25 mins, which does not seem too long, but when you are watching all four episodes together it falls into that script trap that is common in tv shows where each episode must cover what happened in previous episodes in case anyone watching missed it. This becomes frustrating for the binge viewer, especially as there are only four episodes in total! Surely, we can trust the audience more.

What we are left with is a competently acted show that over relies on Jasmine Jobson rhetorically asking things as her character Lisa’s friends and family go about their lives unaware, she is haunting them.

Verdict: 6.5/10. A solid show that seems to be held back by its refusal to push itself into uncomfortable territory. What positives it does have become overwhelmed by the pacing of the four episodes. It remains a solid watch though; it just leaves so much potential on the table.
