The Magician was an American television series that lasted one season (21 episodes) from March 17th 1973 through to April 15th 1974. Despite its brief run, the show left a lasting impression on fans, largely due to the charisma of its star, Bill Bixby. Known for his roles in My Favourite Martian, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, and later The Incredible Hulk. Bixby brought a unique blend of charm and intensity to the role of Anthony “Tony” Blake, (Anthony Dorian in the Pilot episode – the name was changed due to a conflict with the name of a real-life stage magician) a stage magician who uses his skills to solve crimes, and the show is shamefully overshadowed by his later hit.
As mentioned, Bixby plays Tony Blake, a wealthy and suave magician who travels the world performing illusions whilst only drinking white wine. Blake has a secret life as an amateur detective. Having been wrongly imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, Blake is driven by a desire to help those in need and right injustices. Using his skills in sleight of hand, escapology, and misdirection, Blake outsmarts criminals and solves mysteries that often stump law enforcement.
The show’s unique premise combined elements of crime drama, mystery, and a touch of the supernatural, with Bixby performing many of the magic tricks himself. Many of the episodes of the regular series were preceded by an announcement that the magic tricks were accomplished without trick photography. Also, the show also made use of cutting-edge special effects for the time, particularly in scenes involving Blake’s illusions and escapes. This blend made The Magician stand out in the crowded TV landscape of the 1970s.
Through the series guest stars included Vincent Beck, Amanda McBroom, Ramon Bieri, John Karlen, Peter Brown, Brenda Benet, Geoffrey Deuel, Mark Hamill, Beah Richards, Neville Brand, Susan Oliver, Jane Merrow, Yvonne Craig, Anne Randall, Ed Gilbert, Leslie Parrish, John Colicos, L.Q. Jones, Nina Foch, Mark Lenard, and William Shatner.
Despite its innovative concept and Bixby’s strong performance, The Magician struggled in the ratings and was cancelled after its first season. However, it has since gained a cult following, particularly among fans of Bixby and classic television. Bill Bixby’s portrayal of Tony Blake remains a highlight of his career, demonstrating his versatility as an actor. The Magician may have been short-lived, but it left a lasting impression on those who remember it, standing as a unique entry in the world of 1970s television crime dramas.
