Now available digitally in North America from Dark Star Pictures, SATRANIC PANIC is a no-budget Australian trans horror comedy film directed, co-produced, and co-written by 20-year-old award-winning trans filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay. Shot with a predominantly queer, nonbinary, and trans cast and crew, the film premiered to high praise at SXSW Australia in 2023 before having its American premiere hosted by Outfest. It went on to screen at Panic Fest, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Salem Horror Fest, and the Fantaspoa – International Fantastic Film Festival, in addition to select theatrical engagements.
The film stars Mackay’s frequent collaborators Cassie Hamilton, who can be seen in Vera Drew’s breakout hit THE PEOPLE’S JOKER and Mackay’s forthcoming holiday horror CARNAGE FOR CHRISTMAS, Zarif, who also acts in Mackay’s next feature, and Lisa Fanto, whose credits include Mackay’s earlier films, T BLOCKERS and BAD GIRL BOOGEY. The cast is rounded out by Chris Asimos (FAGS IN THE FAST LANE) and Patty Glavieux (BLOOD CITY).
When Max, trans queen Aria’s found brother and the love of artist Jay’s life, is ruthlessly slaughtered by a shadowy cult in a ritual to summon a cadre of demons, two friends will follow a mysterious note promising answers and hit the road. Together they will slay the demons that oppose them, perform at drag gigs, make uncertain allies, and uncover a conspiracy of prejudice and self-hatred, that leads closer to home than they’d ever imagined. A bloody, demon-infested road movie about the power of claiming one’s identity and the importance of chosen family, Satranic Panic exposes the hypocrisy of the status quo with biting wit, killer drag, and incredible tits.
SATRANIC PANIC is Mackay’s fourth feature following T BLOCKERS (2023), featuring musical performances from Australian drag performer and former RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under contestant Etcetera Etcetera, Cassie Workman, and Joni Ayton-Kent, BAD GIRL BOOGEY (2022), Mackay’s Halloween horror with a cameo from horror icon Bill Mosley, and SO VAM (2021), her breakout debut starring BenDeLaCreme and Etcetera Etcetera and released exclusively by Shudder.
