Eric and Julia Lewald, and director Larry Houston, the creative team behind X-Men: The Animated Series revealed a few years back that they were putting together a pitch for Disney+ to revive the show. Now The Wrap is reporting that a new series, tentatively titled X-Men ’97, will pick up where the original series finished!
The original show ran from 1992-1997 lasting for five seasons (with 76 episodes in total). The ending was slightly messed up because Sidney Iwanter, an executive at Fox, originally planned on “ending” the series with a big bang with the episodes “Beyond Good and Evil – parts 1-4”. It was planned to have characters leaving the team at the conclusion, but at the last-minute Fox asked for more episodes. Unfortunately, at the time Marvel was filing for bankruptcy and could not afford to produce more episodes, so Saban funded them directly meaning the show officially “ended” things with X-Men: Graduation Day. These six episodes looked very different to the previous 70 episodes.
During its initial run X-Men: The Animated Series became one of the first animated shows to be serialized, with each of the episodes continuing into the next, although most of them also stand alone as separate shows. Problems soon arose though after “The Phoenix Saga” where remaining episodes were aired out of continuity order. This was due to the fact the episodes were being animated at different studios. These problems led to the writers deciding not to continue with linear storylines. Unfortunately, continuity problems became so bad that X-Men: No Mutant Is an Island (1996) and episode X-Men: Longshot (1996) did not air for two years after they should have, thanks to animation quality issues. “No Mutant is an Island” was *supposed* to explain Jean Grey’s return, setting up the Dark Phoenix Saga, but instead she was already back when the episode aired!
Returning to the show will be Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, and Alyson Court alongside newcomers Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.
The original plans for Season 6 were to skip forward in time and show the X-Men functioning without Professor Xavier. Much of the season would’ve featured the X-Men having adventures in space after receiving a distress call from the Shi’ar Empire. So, we shall see! The show is expected to drop in 2023!
