Night of the Creeps (1986)

Fred Dekker’s supremely enjoyable throwback chiller Night of the Creeps combines classic horror and sci-fi elements with crazy humour and loving in-jokes. It stars Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, and Tom Atkins.

The film opens in 1959 and we are on board a spacecraft where two aliens race to keep an experiment from being released by a third member of the crew. The seemingly possessed third alien shoots the canister into space where it crashes to Earth!

Nearby, a college man takes his date to a parking spot when they see a falling star and investigate. It lands in the path of an escaped criminally insane mental patient. As his date is attacked by the axe-wielding maniac, the boy finds the canister, from which a small slug-like thing jumps out and into his mouth!

We then flash forward to twenty-seven years later. It is 1986! Chris Romero (Jason Lively) pines over his former girlfriend with his friend J.C. (Steve Marshall). Then it is pledge week at Corman University and Chris spots a girl called Cynthia Cronenberg (Jill Whitlow) and falls head over heels for her. He decides to join Cynthia’s boyfriend’s fraternity in the hope of getting her attention. To join they are given the mission of stealing a cadaver from the university medical center and depositing it on the steps of a rival fraternity house. Instead Chris and J.C. find a frozen corpse in a secret room that grabs them. Then run off but the thawed corpse kills a medical student and doesn’t appear to be finished there…
