Invincible Ep. 4: Neil Armstrong Eat Your Heart Out begins with Mark/Invincible (Steven Yeun) is still being trained by his dad Nolan/Omni-Man (J. K. Simmons), during training a father/son chat perhaps gives hints at the mindset Nolan and foreshadows what is to come.
The Mauler is still at large and is beginning the process of cloning himself once again.
Meanwhile, Red Rush’s wife Olga (Grey Griffin) is angry that her husband’s killer has not yet been found. She hires Debbie to help sell her house as she wants to return to Russia as she has little trust in the GDA and wants to get away.
Elsewhere, Robot (Zachary Quinto) brings the new Guardians into HQ where they are addressed by Cecil Stedman (Walt Goggins). Later, Robot’s mysterious agenda is hinted at further when steals a sample of Rex’s (Jason Mantzoukas) DNA during a conversation.
Later, Cecil miscalculates a teleport into the Grayson home resulting in Nolan attacking him on reflex. After the situation calms down, Cecil asks Nolan’s help to protect the first mission to Mars. After a discussion Mark decides he will go in his place.
As Mark goes to Mars, Nolan and Debbie take a vacation trying to rekindle their romance.
On Mars, Mark’s lack of attention allows the Martians to abduct all the astronauts as they aim to stop the parasitic Sequids from spreading to Earth. The Martian Emperor (Djimon Hounsou) decides the best way to do this is to order their execution. Invincible hastily evacuates the astronauts and lifts off their shuttle, unaware a Sequid replaced an astronaut.
Back at the GDA, Cecil arrests Darkblood (Clancy Brown) to banish him back to Hell. Cecil believes Darkblood but the fact that he will not drop the case is a big issue to him. Cecil needs to know Nolan’s motives for killing the Guardians in the first place.
As the episodes ends, we see Robot present the DNA sample to the deformed Rudy Connors in his tank, ready to start “phase-one.”
Then, in Debbie’s closet, unbeknownst to anyone, Darkblood hid his notepad. This will allow him to return to Earth!
Verdict: 7/10. The weakest episode so far but that says more on the quality of the previous three. This episode lays out a lot of groundwork that will pay off in the future. So many little details that will pay off in bigger ways in the future. Robot is growing into an intriguing character, and layers have been added to Cecil’s character. Darkblood remains a character I want to know more about!
