Written, directed, and starring Ryan Barton-Grimley, Hawk and Rev: Vampire Slayers takes place in Santa Muerte, California and follows Hawk (Barton-Grimley)- a security guard and former member of the armed forces who is currently on parole after being convicted of killing someone he insisted was a vampire! Hawk lives in a tent in his parents’ garden and spends his free time watchning Nunsploitation porn. His best friend is Rev (Ari Schneider), a vegan pacifist born of nudist hippie parents and together they like to hunt for vampires at night.
Trouble brews when Hawk believes he has found a new vampire coven who even have their own gimp, and soon Theo (Jana Savage) joins the duo in this 80’s infused horror investigation!
Besides the 80’s horror homages there is little to keep you watching unfortunately. Whilst the style of the film is a big clue on what to expect, I found the film dragging heavily at times. The film is unapologetic in its style and when this works it works very well. Sometime though it is not as sucessful as it thinks it is. It is a shame really as there has clealry been time and effort put in here and I went into this film really hoping to like it.
Verdict: 4/10. What should of been something unique comes across as an overexposed joke than has sadly run its course. I wonder if it was in smaller twenty minute episode chunks that it would have been easier to digest and more enjoyable. It does have some excellent moments but unfotunately overfamiliarity makes it crawl over the finish line.
