It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that Hammer Horror legend Barbara Shelley has passed away at the age of 88 years old. The sad news was announced by her agent Thomas Bowington who stated that she “was Hammer’s number one leading lady and the technicolour queen of Hammer. On screen she could be quietly evil. She goes from statuesque beauty to just animalistic wildness. She was a regular favourite of Hammer events and autograph shows but also performed on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company.”
“When I first started doing Hammer, all the so-called classic actors looked down on the horror film. There is a great thrill for me in having done Hammer and being known. All the other things I did, nobody remembers those. But the horror films, I’m very grateful to them because they built me a fan base, and I’m very touched that people will come and ask for my autograph.”
Through her career Shelley appeared in New Moon, Cat Girl, The End of the Line, The Camp on Blood Island, Blood of the Vampire, The Invisible Man, Village of the Damned, Danger Man, The Shadow of the Cat, The Saint, Ghost Squad, Death Trap, Stranglehold, The New Phil Silvers Show, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Secret of Blood Island, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Rasputin: The Mad Monk, The Avengers, Quatermass and the Pit, Man in a Suitcase, Blake’s 7, Doctor Who, and The Dark Angel.
