Superstars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito team up for this hilarious 80s comedy classic from director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters). The idea of them being twins is crazy, as DeVito is 3 years older than Arnie!
An ambitious genetic experiment takes the wrong turn when two twins – who look nothing alike – are born and then separated. Years later, the unlikely siblings meet: Julius a highly educated but sheltered giant with a big heart, and Vincent, a pint- sized hustler with an insatiable lust for women and money. With girlfriends in tow and a hitman on their tail, the new found brothers set off on a wild, cross-country misadventure to find their mother – but end up finding out more about themselves.
Arnie made more from this movie than he did from any other film. He and DeVito were given the option of doing this movie or Suburban Commando (1991); had the two chosen Suburban Commando, Hulk Hogan and Christopher Lloyd would have done this movie.
Universal needed to know if the stars were committed very early on because they were under deadline. They made the deal on a napkin at lunch with agents; they signed it and DeVito then had it framed. Schwarzenegger, DeVito and Reitman all agreed to be paid out of the profits. The film was a commercial success, grossing $216 million worldwide. Schwarzenegger made a whopping $35,000,000 and that was in 1988. Unsurprisingly he said doing Twins was the best decision he ever made. Suburban Commando was made for $11m and took just $8m at the box office.
The original title was The Experiment but it was dropped because of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Germanic background – and its Nazi connotations. It was his first proper foray in to comedy. He trained with Mr TV himself Milton Berle to prepare for the comedic
acting in the film. Imagine what it would have been like if he hadn’t!
A sequel to Twins has been discussed for years and Schwarzenegger is still saying that it is going to happen. In 2018 Ivan Reitman was said to be looking at the script by Ryan Dixon and Josh Gad (Olaf from Frozen). Triplets would see Danny Devito reprise his role with Eddie Murphy joining as the third brother!
