Review- Promising Young Woman (2020)

Written and directed by Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman is a revenge movie focusing on Cassandra Thomas (Carey Mulligan), a young woman who is traumatised by a mysterious tragic event in her past and seeks out vengeance against those who wrong her!

The movie has a typical opening with a bunch of jocks circling like vultures on a drunken Cassandra in a nightclub. Just as it is about to get cliché though Cassandra is saved by Jez (Adam Brody). Although, as it all unfolds it turns out Jez is the true villain of the piece and takes her home and attempts to assaults her before realising the playa was played!

Mysteries unfold about Cassie’s absent best friend, Nina. Something happened to Nina and because of it Cassandra or Cassie as she is known dropped out of Med School and is unable to move forward and leave these tragic events behind her. She is now 30 years old and still living with her parents (Clancy Brown and Jennifer Coolidge) and working as a coffee shop barista.

The genius of Fennell is how she reveals what happened to Nina slowly and it is made very clear she was a victim of not just one privileged man but a system that protected the criminal over the accuser. A system that Cassie is determined to dismantle one horrible man at a time.

Verdict: 7/10. The tonal shifts that occur in Promising Young Woman are not always beneficial to the story telling but it is saved by the dark humour that is layered throughout the movie. Just how dark you like your humour may effect your enjoyment of this movie. Whilst the ending falls short of expectations this is still a film you will remember long after you have watched it.
