It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to report that the Great Emperor Ming himself Max von Sydow has passed away at the age of 90 years old on Sunday at his home in Provence, France. His wife, French documentary filmmaker and producer Catherine von Sydow announced the sad news earlier today:
“It’s with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max Von Sydow on March 8, 2020,”
Whilst most recently known for his roles as Lor San Tekka in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the Three-Eyed Raven on HBO’s Game of Thrones (for which he received an Emmy nomination), the twice Oscar nominated von Sydow also appeared in The Seventh Seal, Minority Report, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Exorcist, The Ultimate Warrior, The Far Side of Paradise, Voyage of the Damned, Exorcist II: The Heretic, March or Die, Death Watch, Escape to Victory, Conan the Barbarian, Strange Brew, Never Say Never Again, Dreamscape, Awakenings, Judge Dredd, What Dreams May Come, Rush Hour 3, Dune, Shutter Island, Robin Hood, and of course his iconic performance as Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon. He was also the uncredited voice of Viggo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters II.
“The film you hear about the most is The Exorcist. When people come up to me and say, ‘Oh, you scared me!’ I was the good guy in that film!”
