VFW (2020)

Directed by Joe Begos, VFW  is a throwback siege movie in every sense of the word. This is a movie that is made for true film lovers of all ages. Just sit back and let the grainy purple/blue neon wash over with you and dowse you with traditional video store gore! I mean what is wrong about watching a group of war veterans defend their local VFW post and an innocent teenage girl against a deranged drug dealer and his relentless army of punk mutants.

We meet Fred (Stephen Lang) a Vietnam veteran who spends his days pouring shots and trading stories at a VFW hall with his army buddies Walter (William Sadler), Lou (Martin Kove), Doug (David Patrick Kelly), Abe (Fred Williamson), and Tom, a.k.a. Z (George Wendt). The most dangerous things these guys face these days is dodgy wiring and broken toilets.

Outside the VFW hall the city is a mess with lots of people hooked on a drug called “hype.” Hype turns its users into braindead, bloodthirsty mutants who for this more are for all intensive purposes are zombies. These two worlds collide when punk rocker girl Lizard (Sierra McCormick) steals a stash of hype from local drug lord named Boz (Travis Hammer) and in her escape comes crashing through the VFW doors. Of course Boz and the hype victims come in pursuit of the stolen drugs (it is revealed that Lizard stole them as revenge for the death of her addict sister)…

Verdict: 8.5 /10. VFW is a fast paced enjoyable movie with a believable cast that you want to sit down and drink with. It is an unapologetic balls out rock ‘n’ roll siege movie that makes me wish that people could discover it on a video store shelf and take it home and change their lives. Unfortunately those days are gone but there are those who still gather to remember much like the VFWs.
