Locke & Key Ep. 1: Welcome to Matheson

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez, Netflix’s Locke & Key debuted on 7th February 2020 for a season of ten episodes. The first episode Welcome to Matheson begins as Mark Cho (Played by Ken Pak) receives a phone call informing of the news that Rendell Locke (played by Bill Heck) is dead…

We then skip a few months and find the Locke family relocating to the Key house in Matheson after Rendell’s murder. The family consist of mother Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield), eldest son Tyler (Connor Jessup), daughter Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and youngest son Bode (Jackson Robert Scott). Rendell’s younger brother Duncan (Aaron Ashmore) helps them move in. We learn that Rendell was killed by student Sam Lesser who was one of his students.

One night Bode hears a female voice coming from the well house. The voice claims to be his echo. Later after Tyler and Kinsey start school, Bode hears the voice again and the audience see the form of a silhouetted female (Laysla De Oliveira). She tells him there’s a key that can let him be a ghost, and one that changes the way he looks, and one that takes him anywhere else in the world. These keys are all in his house…

The first key Bode finds is the Anywhere Key that can be used on any door to travel to a place he has seen. He then finds the Mirror Key down the sink, which opens a portal to a dimension that falsely reflects ones’ true self. Nina arrives to see Bode using the key, and walks through the mirror herself and becomes trapped. Bode runs and asks Echo for help who says she will if he gives her the Anywhere Key. Echo takes it and abandons Bode escaping the well house in the process. Luckily Tyler and Kinsey arrive in time to help with the situation.  After they save her, Nina seems to forget the whole experience.

We then see that Echo has used the Anywhere Key to meet Sam Lesser (Thomas Mitchell Barnet) in prison.

Verdict: 7/10. As always changes have been made from the source material but the core themes are still present. I am looking forward to seeing how this develops. My only concern is if the show can go dark enough when it needs to. Anyways at this point I am still watching and wanting more!
