It is Cult Faction’s sad duty to announce that actor and comedian John Witherspoon has passed away at the age of 77 years old. The sad news was broken by his family in a statement to Deadline:
“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 7. He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was huge deal to us.”
Witherspoon was best known for his role as Ice Cube’s father Mr. Jones in the 1995 breakout hit Friday and its sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next. He was expected to resume the role for the “in-production” final instalment of the franchise titled Last Friday.
He also made appearances in The Incredible Hulk, The Jazz Singer, WKRP in Cincinnati, Hill Street Blues, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back!, The Meteor Man, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Murder Was the Case: The Movie, Vampire in Brooklyn, Bulworth, Dr. Dolittle 2, Soul Plane, Kim Possible, The Boondocks, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, BoJack Horseman, and Black Jesus.
