It was with great excitement that I sat down to watch a new Critters movie but Critters Attack! is by far the worst movie in the Critters franchise. Now don’t get me wrong I know that the Critter’s franchise is not filled with Oscar winning performances but this film negates everything that came before it. I have said it a million times – respect the source material! In this case any rules surrounding the Crites and their strengths and weaknesses seems to have been forgotten, as well as the fact they could all lay eggs! Instead we are left with some awesome hand puppets that sadly act differently to their predecessors. These practical effects are what earn the points here but even they can’t save this stagnant script.
The self aware humour that underpinned the previous instalments has also vanished, replaced with moody teen overacting that would have been at home on Nickelodeon in the 1990’s. There are some moments where the acting shines through but for the majority it is all soaked up by the cardboard that surrounds it.
Verdict: 2/10 Practical effects impress greatly and show you can still achieve a lot without CGI. Sadly that is about it, even the cameo looked phoned in. In forgetting what makes up the Crites (a queen indeed) you forgot what made these films unique.
