Cult TV Essentials: The Book Group

Created by Annie Griffin, The Book Group ran for two seasons (12 episodes) in 2002 and detailed the plight of American Clare Pettengill (Anne Dudek), who, at the start of the series, had recently arrived in Glasgow, Scotland. Not knowing anyone in the area Clare decides to set up a book group in the hope of finding some friends.

Her advert is answered by a big headed drug using postgraduate student Barney Glendenning (James Lance), wheelchair bound aspiring writer Kenny McLeod (Rory McCann), three discontented footballers’ wives (Michelle Gomez, Saskia Mulder, Bonnie Engstrom), and Rab (Derek Riddell) a hardcore football fan who hides his homosexuality.

As the group begin their meetings it is clear that Clare’s reasons for setting up the group may also be similar to the reasons a lot of the members joined. The show explores their lives and whether or not they actually managed to even read a book to discuss!
