Heroes of Cult: Ismael ‘East’ Carlo

Ismael Manny “East” Carlo was born on January 29, 1942) in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and was later raised in Spanish Harlem. At the age of 17 years old he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Panama. Following his time in the army Carlo moved to Florida and took a job as a janitor at a local theatre where he soon began an interest in acting.

Carlo’s first onscreen appearance was in 1975 on the television show Caribe where he played a doctor, he followed this up the same year with a role in the TV movie Beyond the Bermuda Triangle. His career continued with roles in Baretta, Hart to Hart, Defiance, The Tarzan/Lone Ranger/Zorro Adventure Hour, Lou Grant, and Hill Street Blues.

In 1981 Carlo voiced Fray Gaspar (and some other characters) in the cartoon series The New Adventures of Zorro and then went on to play Judge Sanchez in Farrell for the People. As the early 80’s continued Carlo notched up roles in Voyagers, Cagney and Lacey, Gavilan, Tales of the Golden Monkey, Sparkling Cyanide, Right of Way, Riptide, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

Between 1984 and 1985 Carlo played Ruben Andrade in the soap Santa Barbara and then appeared in Fame. Also at this time Carlo began racking up a number of appearances on shows like The A-Team, T.J. Hooker, Crazy Like A Fox, Airwolf, Hotel, Crime Story, Hunter, Miami Vice, and Baywatch.

As the 1990’s rolled in so did more roles including The 100 Lives of Black Jack Savage, Fire: Trapped on the 37th Floor, L.A. Law, P.S.I. Luv U, Drug Wars: The Cocaine Cartel, Renegade, Intent to Kill, Silk Stalkings, The Untouchables, Murder She Wrote, Eraser, Nostromo, Michael Hayes, USA High, Nash Bridges, Air America, Wild Wild West, and The Parkers.

As the new millennium dawned Carlo remained active with roles in Family Law, A Family in Crisis: The Elian Gonzales Story, The Way She Moves, Fidel, CSI: Miami, George Lopez, Commander in Chief, Bandidas, Prison Break, Ghost Whisperer, Days of Our Lives, and Double Duty.

Between 2009-10 Carlo played Ramiro Valens in Cold Case, then appeared in Ghost Whisperer, Persons Unknown, and then in 2011 he played Don Santiago in True Blood.
