Directed by Luigi Bazzoni, Footprints on the Moon (aka Le Orme) follows a young woman named Alice Cespi (played by Florinda Bolkan) whose life is starting to fall apart at the seems. The reason behind this appears to be linked to childhood memories she has of being forced to watch a film called “Footprints on the Moon” involving an unethical experiment in leaving astronauts stranded on the moon’s surface.
The movie has traumatised Alice her whole life with her suffering terrible dreams that have resulted in her becoming addicted to tranquilizers. The drugs and her deteriorating mental state result in her missing work regularly which in turn leads her to get sacked from her job.
Following the loss of her job, Alice receives a strange postcard which leads her to make a decision to travel to a rundown old tourist town called Garma. In Gama Alice meets a girl named Paula Burton (Nicoletta Elmi). Paula informs Alice that she looks exactly like another woman, Nicole, currently staying at the faded resort.
Alice then encounters a series of strange people and circumstances, all leading her closer to unlocking the possibly deadly mystery…
