Cult Video Game Essentials: Black Tiger

Black Tiger was a 1987 platform game released for the arcades by Capcom. The hero of the game is a strong barbarian who jumps and fights his way through a variety levels and bosses.

For its time, there was a lot of exploring to do with its eight-way scrolling, two-dimensional levels with many hidden bonuses to encourage and reward exploration. Some of these bonuses are a bit of a cheat though as they only offer “advice” that most players can work out on their own. You can also earn “Zenny coins” which let you purchase upgrades to their weapons and armour, keys for treasure chests, and anti-poisoning potions. Also you can get special items that reveal coins, upgraded armour, full vitality, extra lives, extra time, or simply bonus points may be found by attacking certain walls. The player’s vitality bar will also increase up to three times as a reward for reaching score benchmarks.
