‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ to become tv series

Netflix is trying its hand at adapting Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events books into an original series, the streaming service announced today.

The books follow the travails of the orphaned Baudelaire children, who must contend with the evil Count Olaf. “I can’t believe it. After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books,” Snicket (the pen name of author Daniel Handler) himself said in a statement from what the press release deemed an “undisclosed location.”

The Jim Carrey-starring film adaptation of the book came out in 2004, and while the film was relatively well-received, it wasn’t a runaway success at the box office, winning its opening weekend but taking in only a “modest number given industry expectations,” EW reported at the time.  A sequel never came. The TV Paramount, which produced the film, is on board for the series.

“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series of Unfortunate Events.  We are proud to start work on a series for a global audience that already loves the books,” Netflix’s vice president of original content Cindy Holland said. “The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.”
