Day of the Panther (1987)

Day of the Panther is a 1987 Australian martial arts action film directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith, featuring Edward John Stazak in the lead role. This film is notable for its blend of martial arts choreography, an Australian setting, and a storyline centered around vengeance and justice. It serves as a prequel to Strike of the Panther, released the same year, continuing the exploits of its protagonist, Jason Blade.

The film follows Jason Blade (Edward John Stazak), a young martial artist and detective, trained in the ancient art of the Panther, a discipline passed down through generations within his family. The Panthers are a secretive order known for their mastery of martial arts and their commitment to justice. The story begins with Jason and his best friend/cousin Linda Anderson (Linda Megier), who are both training in this ancient martial art form under the guidance of Jason’s father, William Anderson (John Stanton), who is also Linda’s uncle.

The plot thickens when Jason and Linda, after completing their training, return to Perth, Australia. They intend to use their martial arts skills to combat crime, but soon find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous criminal syndicate led by the ruthless drug lord, Damien Zukor (Michael Carman). Zukor, who has a stranglehold over the city’s underworld, becomes aware of the threat posed by Jason and Linda’s presence.

Tragedy strikes when Linda is murdered by Zukor’s henchmen after she uncovers incriminating evidence against the syndicate. Jason, devastated by the loss of his best friend, vows to bring the culprits to justice. Driven by a combination of grief and a strong sense of duty, Jason takes on the mantle of the Panther and begins a relentless pursuit of the criminals responsible for Linda’s death.

Jason’s quest for justice pits him against a series of formidable foes, each skilled in combat and loyal to Zukor. The film showcases numerous martial arts battles as Jason uses his skills to dismantle Zukor’s criminal empire piece by piece. As he gets closer to the core of the syndicate, he faces increasing danger, but his resolve remains unshaken.

Along the way, Jason receives assistance from senior police officer Anderson, who supports his mission while cautioning him about the dangers of taking the law into his own hands. The narrative balances Jason’s personal vendetta with a broader moral question about justice and the rule of law.

The climax of “Day of the Panther” is an intense showdown between Jason Blade and Damien Zukor. In a final confrontation, Jason’s mastery of the Panther martial arts technique is put to the test against Zukor and his heavily armed henchmen. The film culminates in a dramatic and action-packed sequence, showcasing Jason’s martial arts prowess and the culmination of his journey for vengeance and justice.

In the end, Jason successfully dismantles the syndicate and brings Zukor to justice, avenging Linda’s death and fulfilling his duty as a Panther. However, the victory is bittersweet, as Jason must come to terms with the loss of his friend and the violent path he had to tread.

While the film may follow a conventional storyline, it stands out for its energetic fight sequences and the unique fusion of Western and Eastern cinematic influences. For fans of martial arts films, “Day of the Panther” offers a nostalgic trip back to a time when the genre was at its peak, filled with high-octane action and the timeless quest for justice!
